Overview
What is PM Surya Ghar?
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme launched in February 2024 to accelerate rooftop solar adoption among residential electricity consumers. Eligible households receive Central Financial Assistance towards the cost of a grid-connected rooftop solar system.
The scheme is administered through the National Portal for Rooftop Solar in coordination with your electricity distribution company. Applications, feasibility approval, commissioning and subsidy disbursement are all tracked through that portal.
Applicable capacity slabs, subsidy amounts and procedural requirements are defined by the scheme guidelines and are revised from time to time. Always verify current figures on the official national portal before applying.

Four Numbers That Must Stay Separate
Confusion in rooftop solar usually comes from mixing these up. Any honest proposal keeps them distinct.
Solar system cost
The full installed cost of your system — modules, inverter, structure, cabling, protection, installation and commissioning.
Client contribution
The installed cost less the applicable subsidy. This is what you actually pay for the asset.
Net metering
A separate DISCOM arrangement that credits your exported surplus units. It affects your bill, not the subsidy amount.
Who can apply?
The scheme is intended for residential consumers. Broad eligibility conditions include:
- The applicant is a residential electricity consumer with a valid connection.
- The property is owned by the applicant, or installation is authorised by the owner.
- A rooftop solar subsidy has not already been availed for the same connection.
- Adequate shadow-free roof area is available for the proposed capacity.
- Installation is carried out by a vendor registered under the scheme, using eligible components.
Required documents
Exact requirements vary by state and distribution company. Typically you will need:
- Recent electricity bill for the connection
- Proof of identity (as accepted on the national portal)
- Proof of property ownership or owner authorisation
- Bank account details for subsidy disbursement
- Photographs of the roof / installation site as required

Application, Installation and Subsidy Process

Register on the national portal
Create an account using your state, distribution company and consumer number, then submit the rooftop solar application.

Receive feasibility approval
Your distribution company reviews the application and issues technical feasibility approval for the proposed capacity.

Install through a registered vendor
The system is installed using scheme-eligible components by a vendor registered for your state.

Net meter and inspection
Apply for the net meter. The distribution company installs it and carries out the inspection of your installation.

Commissioning certificate
Once inspection is cleared, a commissioning certificate is generated through the portal.

Subsidy disbursement
Submit your bank details on the portal. The Central Financial Assistance is credited to your account after verification.
